Hi, Courtney,

Being able to spell 'veterinary' would be a help, too!

Hi,

I really want to be a vet. I'm doing well in school just now and have picked ( what i think is ) the right subjects for the job. I've had experience already, with horses and smaller animals but i have one problem. I'm very frightened of German Shephards. Is there a possibility that i could still be a vet and not work with the German Shephards, or will i need to get over my fear?

Thanks

Meg

But in hurting them you are making them better so you should feel good because may be saving its life

Hi i am about to take on two weeks of work experience , although i already have veterinary and farm animal work experience under my belt , i am going to be spending a week in the labs at cardiff museum and also a furthur week on Flat holm island which is a nature reserve where i will be couting species or monitoring climate change for example , will these two work experiences also be seen as valuble experience for veterinary medicine? , thankyou for your time.

yes - as long as you aim to get the most out of them. if you were asked about them in interview you would need to put a veterinary spin on them and say how it helped you to prepare for vet school/how it was beneficial in learning about veterinary medicine.

Firstly, my apologies as i haven't read through all the posts on this site, i was reading a few, and noticed the general concensus swayed towards the traditional route of entry.

Currently there are a few organisations in place to try and help students from alternative routes and educational backgrounds into veterinary medicine, those studying National diplomas are now being accepted onto gateway courses at nottingham university and the RCVS, a triple distinction is required, and in moist cases one AS in chemistry, providing particular biology modules are covered in the ND, extensive work experience is a must. There is a lovely woman, whose name i am unsure of at the RCVS who is working alongside CAVE and another association that im unsure of.

Please, if you have taken the alternative route, look into CAVE and a website i believe to be iwanttobeavet.co.uk or something similar, you will find a wealth of information. Don't give up!!!

You should aim for A or A* in Cemistry and Biology, maybe a B in Physics or Maths in your A levels as well as getting some experience of working with animals.

Hi,

I'm currently in highschool and have just chosen my options for standard grades. I am only twelve but I have had my heart set on being a vet or at least in Medicine for a long time. The subjects I have chosen are:

Biology
Chemistry
Art & Design
Graph Communications
Home Economics
Geography.

English, Maths, R.E and P.E are compulsory and I will be taking Drama when I'm a senior at school depending on my English results. Have I made the right choices or did I miss something important out?

If you can't cope with animals in fear or pain - and bear in mind when you inject/examine an animal you may cause it pain - you are probably not cut out to be a vet.

Sorry to be so blunt, but it's a tough career that takes no prisoners. It is hard to get into and the course is long/arduous. The job has its rewards, but it isn't a lifestyle for the faint-hearted.

For any of you out there keen to become a vet (or think you are), go see practice with vets, spend time working with farm animals and horses, in kennels/catteries etc. Then if you decide it's for you, you need to get A's at A levels with an absolute minimum of 2 science A levels (one must be in Chemistry), preferably 3 science A levels at A/A*?

GCSE grades - when I applied to vet school, A's weren't mandatory as long as you could explain why you didn't achieve highly at GCSE. Now, I suspect A/A* would be required in all subjects (especially Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

heyy, i am also wanting to become a vet and eventually specialise in farm and equine, as far as i know you need C's or above in all 3 science GCSE's and a good grade in maths or english. the information posted by other users is very good and if you are confused the best thing to do is ask your local vet as they will know best. Also i am hoping to become a veterinary nurse first so if, for whatever reason, i don't make it as a vet, i will still have that to fall back on.
I hope this has helped,

Hey, firstly, I want to become a vet surgeon, I'm currently in year 11 and my prediction are A*s and As, but I don't do physics. is that a problem? I'm also doing a Foundations of Advanced maths paper extra. My school is doing IGCSE will that affect it? and my subjects are: Geography; History; Maths; Biology; Chemistry; RS; French; English Language; English Literature; Drama. I'm also trying to do my work experience in a veterinary surgery. Is there any suggestions on how I can better my chances and if physics is a problem?

Crikey! Everyone wants to be a vet and there are so many questions! I am going to write a definitive answer for you all that covers everything and list it in a separate topic so you can all look at it then I will close this topic until someone asks something that I have not included. Give me a couple of days to get the answer right and then you can all look at it and if I have not answered your question then you can post a separate message!! I will call it 'Qualifications to be a vet'.

hello my name is leah and im 12 years old

ok im in year 8 now in the uk, liverpool
and only last year i realized i wanted to become a vet, my reasons for that are i love animals i have had a lot of experience with animals currently i have 3 cats and a hamster. i used to have a dog when i was younger but we had to give it away because my mum was pregnant and it kept urinating on the floor which was a hazard for my mum. Also my aunties and uncles both have dogs sharpays and chou. so im very familar about what cats and dogs are like.

so i was thinking next year we have to pick our options as you kow i wanna be a vet, i know i need biology, chemistry, english language and maths so what levels would i need to get for each one to gurante me becoming a vet.

thanks for your time,

You need to look at university websites. Most require many A* - B GCSE grades including physics, maths, biology and chemistry, some need 5/6 As. For A levels the best to do would be chemistry, biology, maths and then one academic subject (not general studies or media studies) to AS. Also most universities require a minimum of 10 weeks varied work experience which can be anywhere from a veterinary surgery to a zoo to a laboratory.

I Want To Be A Vet

This is a guide for those people who are always asking what they need to do to get to be a vet.

It is not enough to just ‘love animals’. There is a lot of competition to get into veterinary schools and generally speaking the minimum grades at A-level are AAB in 3 of Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Maths (Sometimes other subjects are accepted but this is unusual).

At GCSE it is worth having a broad range of subjects with good grades that show that you have a good grasp of many things. It is also important that you have other hobbies so that you can show that you are a well rounded individual.

What is also very important is that you can show that you are dedicated to becoming a vet and understand what it is all about. This means having worked on farms, in riding stables and in animal shelters. If you have not done any of this then you will probably not get very far. Being a vet is much more than fixing sick animals and it is important that you understand about farming and the vet’s role in making sure that the animals we eat are healthy and well cared for. You only need to do a couple of weeks in your holidays in 3 or more places – don’t spend all your holidays doing this because the vet schools will think you are a bit desperate. You also need to spend some time at veterinary practices seeing what goes on there – if you find you do not like the sight of blood or don’t like the idea of clearing up the animal’s mess then this is probably not the job for you. Many practices like having students so are usually willing to let you spend time with them. Make sure you write them a sensible letter and don’t just say ‘I love animals and want to save them all’.

There are websites that are useful. First look at the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons website (rcvs.org.uk) where you can find lots of useful information. After that look at the websites for the universities that teach vets. These are:

Bristol University
Cambridge University
Dublin University
Edinburgh University
Glasgow University
Liverpool University
Royal Veterinary College, London University
Nottingham University

The specific requirements for each university will be available on their websites and also allow you to look at the differences in the courses to help you choose where you would prefer to study.

Hello,

I am currently in year 11 and i've taken biology, history, chemistry and maths at AS and i'm probably going to drop maths for A2. I was wondering what are the chances of me being accepted into a veterinary school in the UK with these A levels (paticularly history) as I really don't enjoy physics!

Thank You

Hi,
So i am currently doing my A levels, at GCSE i have 2A*s 4A's and 4B's, science and maths are all A and above. I am currently on target for an A in biology, chemistry and maths, and a B in physics, so i was wondering what else i can do to make myself stand out? Getting these grades requires a lot of effort and it would be really annoying to get turned down just because i didn't volunteer for the RSPCA for a few weekends etc.
Thanks

hi,
i am looking into becoming a vet in the future and would like to know the qualifications and training requirements for becoming a vet. i am willing and able to do the work needed for this job.
Re: Qualifications needed to become a vet

Unfortunately grades are not the only thing that is important - you have to show dedication - if you do not do voluntary work at a vets or animal charity or work on a farm then you will not be likely to get offered a place - competition is higher than for any other course and only people who show they have the dedication will get offered a place. You are more likely to get offered a place if you get lower grades and show dedication and interest than the other way round. If you do not get experience how can you know if you want to be a vet without finding out first hand what the job entails?
