Want to be a vet!

Hey!

I am interested in becoming a vet, and there are a few questions I want to ask.
What GCSE grades are needed to get into collage? What A-level grades are needed from collage to get into university? Is it difficult to get into collage and university to study Veterinary Surgery? What do you have to study at collage and university? And finally, once people are fully qualified vets, is it difficult to get a job as a Veterinary Surgeon?

Thanks

P.S I am going into the final year of high school soon in the UK, so I need to get a shift on to find this information out.

Thanks v.much

Hi,
It is hard work becoming a vet!
It involves a five year ( at least ) course at a Univeristy veterinary school. In the uK the universities with veterinary schools are London, Cambridge, Bristol, Liverpool, Nottingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh, and you will need to find out from each of them what their entrance requirements are, but you will ned to be thinking about good grades at A level in Chemistry, Bilogy and Physics at least.
At the present time most new graduates have a job within a few weeks of graduating.

To get into college yo just need to get 5Cs, but you will need to get a lot better grades than that to be considered for vet school. They normally require 5As, and atleast B in physics (if taken separately), english language and maths

Hi there!!

Ever since I was tiny I have wanted to become a vet, in particular an Equine vet. I have always loved all animals and all nature especially horses! I know that it is hard work to become a vet, you need very good grades and lots of work experience. I am 14 and in the October holidays I am going to be helping at our local vet's. We also own a sheep farm and I'm always helping especially at lambing time, which is always hard work! At school I take Biology (my favourite subject), Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English, Geography, French and Computing. I get good grades in all my subjects, particularly the sciences.

What advice do you have for getting more work experience?

Hi, Nicola,

I think you are off to a very good start!
Some work in a boarding or quarantine kennel, some dairy farm work and in a riding establishment or livery stable would round off your experience, and if you can offer good grades at A level in chemistry, physics and biology you will be in with a shout.
Good luck!

Hi,

6 or more O levels, at good grades, including Chemistry, Physics and Biology would be a good start, followed by these three subjects at A Grade at A level.
If you look at the message from Hannah ( posted today) and my reply, you will get some idea of what else is required.

Hi, Sammy,

Although the vet schools do look at your O levels, if you manage to achieve straight As in your A levels I would expect you to have a good chance, especially if you do a good interview.

Hi, Corey,

I do not know from which country you are e-mailing, and the university vet school requirements do differ from country to country. Look up your nearest vet school on the internet ( they all have their own websites) and you should get the information you need. You should get some experience of working with animals - in a kennel, a stables or on a farm- before applying for entrance to a veterinary course.
Good luck!

Hello all!

My name is Ashley and I am a Veterinary Student in the UK. I've had a read through some of the posts on this forum and I remember when I was going on the internet to find out information! I was always disappointed at the lack of websites/ information available and much information does seem to be repetitive. It's really hard to generalise and give everyone the same advice as we are all different and therefore need to focus on different things, also everyone is at different stages of your educational lives and so some information may not apply to yourselves. If anybody would like any advice or want to find out more information feel free to email me (ashleydavies9214@yahoo.co.uk) and I'll try and help you out or point you in the right direction.

Good Luck Guys!!

hi all,
im rhiannon and im on my penultimate year of seconday school, at the end of this year i will be taking my B2 exam, P1 and C1 exams (bascially one third of all my science exams) im very interested in becoming an equine/farm, vet smiling smiley i am fairly bright and i recive A*/A/B+ in most subjects (except german) i spend all my time on a farm and have 2 horses of my own. and i have a list of questions for all those who have been there and done all that!\
1. from what age would a vetinary practice accept you on work experience? would it be good to work with an equine dental technician to get an all round picture of being a vet (as sometimes you do have to work with horses teeth im assuming?) as well as a small animal surgery and a dairy farm? this is aswell as following our local equine vet around for 5 days this christmas!
2. what is the best university for becoming a vet then specialising in horses? what universities did you all go to? were they good?
3. is there anything else i can do to put myself ahed of the crowd for being accepted to these universites or get into the vetinary world? im doing my bronze silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh awards these next few years, would this help? and im a keen one day event rider?
4. is there any way how you deal with the surgery aspect of the training? i personally am not .. extatic.... about surgery. i will be able to cope with it and get used to it, but i dont want to go to university and be thrown into surgery. do they ease you into it? or should i do something to help myself before hand?

all your help is wonderfull
thankyou very much

There's already a lot of information available on this via other threads, so the first piece of advice is to look and do your research!!
Different universities have different entry requirements.
Most of the unis in the UK will require A's/B's (Bs minimum) at GCSE science, english, maths.
A Levels are normally AAB, AAA or A*AA (At least two science-pref. biology and chemistry)
If you want to go to the uni in London or Cambridge you have to take an admissions test too.
