Dear Walter Arabella was put to sleep on Wednesday aged 20 years. She was loved so much and is now in a wildflower meadow in the sunshine free from pain and suffering- but you know the vets were brilliant and she really only suffered illness for a week.by Machair - Ask The Vet
Walter we took her to the vets today and it seems she now has diabetes. We have started her on insulin injections to see if it can be stabilised. The vet thinks it may not be possible with her thyroid problem and her age. I fear the end of a treasured friend is imminent and as you say we will not be prolonging her suffering.by Machair - Ask The Vet
Dear Walter This muscle weakness/stiffness in her back legs seems to have got worse this week. She is sometimes struggling to walk on these backlegs which are wide apart. She is due a repeat of her tablets but isn't due a check up till October. Her fur is also really flakey too and generally she seems quite lethargic though of course she is 20.Its just that she is now sleeping most of theby Machair - Ask The Vet
Thank you Walter do you think she should have some treatment for the back legs or shall we leave her alone?by Machair - Ask The Vet
Well Arabella had her 20th birthday at the weekend and her hyperthyroid continues to be well controlled on Felimazole. Just one thing Walter as she has aged over the last year she has some degree of weakness in her back legs which is worse after she has been asleep they seem more stiff and are quite wide apart. It means that sometimes she needs help onto her favourite chair.Do you think she may hby Machair - Ask The Vet
Thank you for that Walter it was very helpful.Just one question it said on no account should you crush the tablets. My husband is a brilliant one for giving them whole so is my daughter as she is a vet student but I must confess to resorting to crushing them up and adding them to food in desperation.Do you know why this is not recommended as if it is dangerous to the cat I will try and perfect myby Machair - Ask The Vet
My cat aged 20 as mentioned in a previous post has been treated with Felimazole for 6 months now for hyperthyroid. Her levels were the highest the vets have seen at over 150.She is doing great now and has normal appetite and her weight is back to normal and her blood pressure is now controlled well. She had some buckling of the retina before she stated on the BP treatment. My question really is Iby Machair - Ask The Vet
My cat Arabella was diagnosed with hyperthyroid in September and has responded very well to felimazole and blood pressure treatment. She has regained all her weight and her appetite is normal again. I noticed she has a lump on her flank which is about 2 to 3 inches across. It is not fixed and is quite movable.I was wondering if it is a lipoma. She is going for her thyroid check up soon so I will meby Machair - Ask The Vet
Walter I just wanted to thank you for all your advice.Teddy was readmitted to The RVC on Sunday and his urea and creatinine levels failed to improve despite the intravenous fluids. He was put to sleep today. Words can't say how wonderful the team were with him.He had some more time with us in reasonable health but was spared any more suffering before he became too weak. The way in which theby Machair - Ask The Vet
Teddy is coming home on Friday. We are going to be giving him fluid injections under the skin to help keep him hydrated.Do you know if there are any dangers for him associated with this procedure and in terms of his drinking do you think it would be useful to get a water fountain for him as normally he drinks from the running kitchen tap which with his weakness will sometimes be difficult when I aby Machair - Ask The Vet
Dear Walter We are going to see them at the vet school hosptal on Friday. They have got him hydrated and his electrolytes are now normal for the time being and he is coming off the IV support today. They are hoping to be able to give him 1 to 3 months quality time at home in peace as long as he can tolerate injections of fluid under the skin which we will have to give him. My daughter is a vet stby Machair - Ask The Vet
He has been diagnosed with polycystic kidney and renal failure by the vet school team.We will talk to them tomorrow about treatment or whether to continue life for poor Teddy.by Machair - Ask The Vet
