This is mainly to Walter as I believe he studied there. I got an offer for Glasgow on Friday and was wondering what sort of things would convince me to choose it over other vet schools (that's if i get any other offers!!). I live near London so it would be quite a change but just want to know what people think makes it a good place to train as a vet for 5 years. thanks in advance, Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Hi Hannah, for your gcses you are going to want to be aiming for mostly A's and A*'s, especially in the triple sciences, maths and english. I'd say the very minimum to aim for is 5 A's. For A level I would recommend taking Biology, Chemistry and either (or both) of Maths/Physics - at A level you will definitely need straight A's or the very minimum of AAB (Chemistry mustby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students

Ok, thank you - Nottingham was really interesting yesterday, but I'm looking forward to my Bristol one next week I spoke to a man from RVC today about post-graduate things, so hopefully I'll find out some more info soon. Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Thanks, sorry I should have said that i'm already applying this year - just got back from my Nottingham interview actually! So from what you said, it would be another 5-7 years after you graduate? I assume you just learn in practice rather than going back to university? or do you go on courses? Knee surgery was just an example though Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Hey Walter, I was just wondering how you would go on to specialise in, for example, knee surgery or something? It's just I met a vet (I think second opinion) who did very complicated procedures, but sadly since work experience students can't observe, I could only look through the door. How would you go about getting this level of skill and how long would it take? Thanks, Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students

Hi, see if you can get any copies of the Veterinary Times from your local vet, also suscribe to the Farmer's Weekly Online newsletter. With regards to important issues today: Bluetounge, Avian Flu and Bovine Tuberculosis are quite relevant. Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students

Beth, business studies is NOT a well respected GCSE! don't drop german or geography, both will prove very useful.by hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Hello Rachael, I'm assuming you are in year 9 if you are picking options. If you are allowed 4 like I was, I would advise trying to take triple science if it's offered, a language or two and a couple of humanities eg. history & geography. Try to avoid 'soft' subjects or those which are blacklisted by universities such as business studies and ICT. Yes, A* and A grades areby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Hi again, since your reply I've gone absolutely mad trying to get work experience, so now I have (some completed, others booked): Part-time job and permanent work exp placement at a Cattery 4 weeks small animal veterinary surgeries 1 week at a public farm 1 week at a beef(cattle) farm 2 1/2 days dairy farm 3 1/2 days at a Veterinary Laboratory 1 week at a kennel/cattery 1by hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
I think you are mistaken Walter, she states "Don't do a degree to get into veterinary medicine" meaning don't do one degree( eg. equine science) and then transfer into veterinary, not don't do the vet degree at all! Of course you must be qualified and the rest of her post clearly explains this. Hannahby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
Hi, my guinea pig is suffering from bladder stones and has had blood in her urine for quite some time. She's about 4 and half now and the other day our vet managed to remove one from her urethra. She has been on two different types of antibiotics, neither of which have had any effect. We will not be taking her to get them removed as she is quite old now and a rescue guinea pig. Funnily enough, this is exactly where I want to work when I'm older! I hope to be nearly fluent by the time I finish my A levels and then keep studying it during my vet sci degree (if all goes to plan) Being a vet in Spain is my ideal job, hopefully the demand for them will still be as strong in however many years time! Thank you! that is the first positive response i've had so far! As for Glasgow, I meant to add that, I guess I don't have a clue at the moment. I'm only leaning towards Bristol because my brother went there, or Cambridge because it's, well, Cambridge! That will be something I'll have to sort out next year, meanwhile, I'll concentrate on getting these A's andby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
I have just started 6th Form after receiving my GCSE results in August. I gained 7 A*s and 4 As and am now studying Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Spanish at A level. I only decided that I wanted to be a vet last summer and I am now panicking about work experience. So far, I have had 1 week at a public farm 3 1/2 days at a Veterinary Laboratory 1 week small vet clinic 1 week at a well respecby hannah_vet - Veterinary Students
