Nippy Collie X

Hi, I have a 12yr old Collie X who has always been good with children until recently. She still acts like a puppy, jumping around and barking when exited but she recently has became nippy with young children. My children are older now so she doesn't come into contact with young children often but I am afraid now even when I take her our if anyone approaches. I think she has became more nervous as she gets older and am wondering if there is anything we can give her or is it just a case of putting a muzzle on her when we are out?

Thanks,
Angie. x

Hi, Angie,
Collies have been bred for generations to round up sheep and cattle, by giving them a nip on their heels. Your bitch is clearly trying to do the same with children, since she does not have any shhe to round up!
I do not think that muzzling is the answer. Try a short lead with a Halti
(From most pet shops and many vets), and a firm 'NO' when she even looks at a child. If you wish more specialist advice, ask your veterinary practice to put you in touch with a dog behaviourist.

Stangely enough, we had a similar problem with a Rescue colly X bitch aged 1. She was the same with strange men and other dogs, so we took a water pistol out on a few walks with us and sprayed her a little if she tried to go after them.

Yes, this may well work - at least it will distract her attention from her 'victim'!
