Hi,
Just wondering which particular antibiotic people are generally using for treating cat bite abscesses? I know amoxy-clav/amoxicillin/antirobe are the preffered treatments but it's so difficult to tablet cats, so 2-3 weeks tablets isn't an idea that the owners favour, and the antibiotic injections surely don't last long enough to cover until it heals? And convenia is so expensive! Help! Email me or post on here

Abscesses usually involve Pasteurella and Streptococci so any penicillin is the antibiotic of choice - ampicillin, amoxycillin are usually all that is necessary. Get someone to show you how to pill a cat properly and then there will be no problems. A lanced abscess requires no more than a week of antibiotics if that in most cases. Convenia has no place in the treatment of cat abscesses at all - shame on people who are lazy and using it.
