MY II YEAR OLD STAFFIE, SONNY, HAS A HUGE TEARDROP SHAPED WART HANGING DOWN FROM THE TOP INSIDE OF HIS FRONT LEG. IT IS ATTACHED BY THICK SKIN. AS HE CAN'T JUMP INTO THE BACK OF MY 4X4 ANYMORE I LIFT HIM IN AFTER HIS WALKS. YESTERDAY HE REALLY SQUEALED WHEN I PICKED HIM UP--I MAY HAVE TUGGED ON HIS WART, DO YOU THINK ITS DANGEROUS FOR HIS HEALTH AS ITS GETTING BIGGER. COULD I HAVE IT REMOVED ON MY PET INSURANCE DO YOU THINK. THANKYOU

Hi, Sue,
I do not know the details of your pet insurance policy, but I would expect the removal of a lump such as you describe to be be covered. Why not get an estimate of the cost from your vet, and phone the insurers and ask them?

MY GRANDMOTHER HAS A PROBLEM WITH WARTS ON HER DOG. SHE HAS A BOY COCKER SPANIEL AND HE HAS NUMEROUS AMOUNTS OF WARTS ON HIS BACK. IS THERE ANY KIND OF REMOVAL THAT YOU CAN BUY EITHER OVER THE NET OR IN A PHARMACY? YOU KNOW, SOMETHING SIMILAR TO A WART REMOVAL FOR HUMANS? WHAT SHOULD WE GET?

Hi, Regan,

These 'warts' should be checked out by a vet before you try any home remedies.

Walter,

What causes the warts? Do you know?

Groomer says my Poodle has one on his head that burst, and one on his stomach that is 'pink'.

Any info would help. I plan to take him to a vet, just want more info.

Hi, rm,

'Warts' is a very loosly applied word which can cover a whole lot of lumps, growths etc on the skin.

True 'warts' or 'virus papillomata' as seen in humans are chronic mild virus infections, most commonly seen in children and in adults on immunosuppressive treatment after, fo example, a kidney, heart or liver transplant.

Youngs dogs quite frequently become infected by a similar virus, and may suddenly grow literally hundreds of these warts all over the body - inside the mouth, on the lips, inside the ear flaps, and on the bare skin of the abdomen. They are totally harmless, and after a few eeks disappear as quickly as they came.

The 'wart' on your poodle's head which 'burst' sounds to me more like a small sebaceous cyst, the discharge from which had hardened in the air, and when this was knocked or cut off by the groomer, the contents of the cyst escaped, giving the appearance of having 'burst'.

A variety of skin tumours - melanomas, mast cell tumours, and others can all look like 'warts' to the untrained eye.

If in any doubt, get your veterinary surgeon to have a look at them.

Hi I have a wire haired fox terrier dog , he has developed about 8 warts on his back quite close together , I first noticed them apearing after a trip to the groomers , could it be possible to catch them from another dog from using the same clippers ? I ve taken him to the vets who just suggested taking them off by surgery , it seems a bit drastic is there something i could buy to put on them to shrink them as in humans ?

Hi, Julie,

My reply above to 'rm' gives some information about 'warts'.
What the lumps are on your dog I cannot say, but they do not sound to me like the ordinary common or garden wart,
If they are true warts they will probably disappear spontaneously, but if they continue to grow and multiply they would probably be better removed.
If you want to try a DIY tremedy any of the applications you can buy from the pharmacist for human use may do, but you must take real precautions to make sure your dog cannot lick it - most contain some sort of caustic which could cause serious problems in his mouth.

Hi

I have a 3 year old West Highland Terrier

Just near his eye, A sort of white wart or lump has developed, it doesnt seem to be causing him any pain, but it does seem to be just hanging in front of the eye. I was wondering what this lump was, and whether it could be removed or treated.

Hi, Simon,

from what you say I think that this could ( and should) be removed very easily by your vet. It will need, at the most, a little local anaesthetic and a quick snip with scissors.

Thank you Walter

We did in fact take him to the vets, the wart turned out to be a tick.

Hi, Simon,

This reminds me of a case I had many years ago when an anxious client phoned to say that her dog had a wart which had fallen off and was walking across the floor!

My dog has what looks like either a round skin tag or a wart inside his mouth. It seems to have gotten a bit bigger. The vet ran across it last time we were there and said she could remove it no problem. However reading through your previous posts im wondering if it does need removed or if it will just go away. It doesnt seem to be bothering him at all but i dont want him getting more and i dont want it getting bigger. It is located on the inside of his check that covers his top of his mouth.

Hi,

If he is a young dog - less than 18 months, and there are more than one 'wart', they will disappear without treatment within a few weeks.
A single 'wart', in an older dog may prove to be more serious, and should, in my opinion, be removed.

On humans, you can use apple cider vinegar (acv ) applied to a cotton ball and taped down with water proof band aids or with duct tape. How do you keep the cotton on a dog? I'm going to figure that out. But I'm going to test the method on my bf's cocker spaniel who has lots of warts, too. I'm hoping maybe a cotton soaked in acv with clear nail polish to hold a piece of gauze pad on the cotton to keep it on might work. He has words on his head and snout area. Generally the wort will turn white, swell, then turn black and fall off. I don't know if anyone has tried it on a dog, but if it works on humans, I'm giving it a shot. Generally, warts are gone within 5 days.

My 7 year old German Shepherd has a double headed wart near his shoulder blades. they were dry and crusty until lastnight when one half fell off and the other looked like it had be caught and was half hanging off and bleeding... he has had them for a couple of months now and had grown slowly. Since lastnight I have been keeping them clean and putting Tea Tree cream on... is there anything else you can suggest? I have some Fuciderm left from a previous problem that is still in date... could I use this? I have been adviced by a vet nurse I know to use Bactakil or childrens wart treatments...

Hi,

My dog Woody has just turned 14 and is absolutely covered in warts. He has a large one on his bottom lip which he is rubbing red raw on a daily basis. He also has a large wart growing inside his ears which have made him totally deaf and appear to have made him lose his balance. He had major surgery last year after he had an absess in his bowel. I was wondering if this infection could have caused a weak immune system and now the warts?
These warts are causing him discomfort and in the last few days I have noticed one of them smelling bad and bleeding too. I have tried cleaning it with salt water but am becoming more concerned. My vet has told me he is unwilling to operate on them because of his age and he has a heart murmur. I just feel I need to do something as he is very fit and active otherwise and it seems a shame to let such a relatively minor condition ruin his golden years!! Any ideas on getting rid of these or atleast keeping them clean and painless?

Thanks alot!!

Hi, Becky,

This is an unusual problem in a dog of this age, and I am at a loss how to advise you.
These warts are clearly causing him considerable distress.
The best advice that I can offer is to request a referral from your vet to a specialist dermatologist. I do not know from where you are calling, but if you live in the UK there are a number of these around the country, and can be found on the Referrals section of the Vetclick home page.

Hi, Arcane 2080,

Since there are so few of these growths, the best thing to do is to have them removed surgically by your vet - a minor procedure which will save you a lot of trouble and your dog a lot of discomfort.

hi, i have a shih tzu aged ten, he has a wart on his neck, and i was just wondering are there any home remedies or anything i can get over the counter to remove it?
the vet will not operate due to his heart problem and his age. But recently he has been scratching it quite a lot and it is weeping a little (which is light brown).
The vet advised me that it was nothing to worry about but it wasn't weeping then.

please help, thank you

Hi,

I cannot understand your vet's reluctance to operate - it could be easily done under a local anaesthetic. Try another vet.

My dog has developed a pink wart like growth on the back of her head. When I look closely I can see what looks like blood vessels in it and the growth itself has further small white lumps on it like ulcers. There is only the one growth, it's been there for a couple of weeks and has grown since it first appeared, it's now about the size of a pea. Could this be something serious?

Hi,

This is probably not serious, but I would advise you to have it removed now whilst it is small, just in case it grwos and turns nasty.

Hi,

I have a female mixed breed, half blue tick I believe, who is just over a year old. I just noticed this pink wart like thing on her front right leg. I don't believe it was there this morning. It's about the size of a nickel. She doesn't seem to notice when you touch or poke it. There's a few hairs in it but very few. It's rough to the touch as well as hard. You can grab at it and pull the skin a bit and feel it move around when you do kind of like a lump under the skin but pinkish on the outside.
What might it be? I dont want to take her to the vet unless there's a need because I just don't have the money for it.
Re: dogs warts

This could of course be all sorts of things but at this age commonly I would think of a histiocytoma (benign tumour which will go away on its own after a few weeks to months, but may need to be removed if it keeps bleeding or the dog keeps worrying at it) or a lick granuloma - caused by the dog worrying at the area; these can be rather annoying and it is important to stop the dog licking it it - it may require antibiotics and/or steroids to clear it up.
