pre-anaesthetic blood testing

Hi,
Doing an anesthesia elective & have a project to write on bloods.
Just wanted to know peoples thought on the value of pre-anaesthetic blood testing- do you think they are of use & do the results actually effect you're choice of anaesthetic drugs. If you are a vet student or vet nurse do you think it has changed how the vet has dealt with that case.
Any contribution appreciated.

Definatley! we offer bloods to all GA patients. only today we had a do - aparently fit and healthy but pre op bloods showed raised liver parameters - we deferred the GA until we had completed BAST and will prob scan the liver when he does come in for GA. Also recently we have had a couple of quite young animals with raised kidney enzymes. we chose a different anaesthetic to the normal 'triple' used in routine neuters.
