Risk level of Rogaine with cats (no replies)

I'm hoping to begin treating my thinning hair with Rogaine, but I've read the active ingredient, Minoxidil, is quite toxic for cats. The thing I can't discern is if this is just if they accidentally consume it, or if its even dangerous to share an environment. As a precaution my plan would be to ensure he doesn't have access to my bedroom or the bathroom, but would this be enough to ensure I'm not putting him at risk?

I took her swimming today at the dog park, could it be that? Could like her thighs/legs/belly rub together to cause some sort of small rash ? Idk if it serious, she doesn't seemed bother by it at all, she is just chilling, but I don't want to take the chance, I would take her to the vet but the vet is closed atm. Any ideas what this is ?

Wobbly cat after sleeping (no replies)

Hi

A week ago my 12 year old ginger tom came to me and flopped down at my feet. My first though was that he had fallen off the bed and hurt his left from paw. His front paw was all stiff and after rubbing it a bit he seemed all better. 2 days later he was sleeping on the bed and became agitated and jumped off the bed. His back legs were weak and he was floppy, but could still walk. We rushed him to the emergency vet who checked him over thoroughly. He found nothing wrong with him, with only a slight agitation reaction( pulls his fur up when touched) on his lower back. But this is completely normal for him. Another 2 days later, he did it again. Again he was sleeping and struggled to get up. Takes him a minute and he is back to normal. We took him to our local vet who suggests it might be seizures and therefore probably a brain tumour. So right now, it's wait and see to see how it progresses and whether we should send him to see a specialist and have an MRI done. He has no other symptoms. Eating/drinking normally. No weight loss. Indoor cat, so no access to anything harmful.

The local vet said it was probably seizures if it seems to affect his cognance. But I was watching him this evening when it happened again. He had been sleeping all afternoon. His tail curls a little, like in the shape of a question mark. He tries to get up, but his legs are slow to respond. He seems resigned to the fact and seems to just wait it out. He is fully responsive while it is happening and even purrs and responds to touch with head nudges. He was even playful and batted at a passing ant, which to me suggests it's not a painful experience.

So if it's not seizures, what could the other possibilities be?
Tx
MPB

He was healthy until about four months ago, when he had his first "attack." He vomited, began breathing very heavily, panting and lost control of his bowel movements. It didn't appear that he ever lost consciousness although he eyes did look "off." We took him to a vet who ran various tests and x-rays and concluded that he had an enlarged heart and put him on enalapril every day. Since then, the seizures or "attacks" have been getting more frequent, although sometimes less severe. He is usually fully recovered within the hour- eating, drinking, using the liter box, snuggling. He seems completely healthy other than these episodes. Does this diagnosis seem correct? Is there something more I can be doing? We will try anything

When I first bought him at three months old he had conjunctivitis in his eyes so we went to the vet and got him treated immediately. Now skip forward it is two years later and remy has always had eye boogies but never anything severe. Well just last weekend he had the most severe case of conjunctivitis I have ever seen. His eye was dropping and sunken so far in. We went to the vet and got all of the medicine needed and treated him. Well it looks great now he is completely healed in his eyes but he has gained some sort of blood blister on his lip. This does not look like a pimple at all. It doesn't even bother him it's just not really pleasant for me to look at and I don't know if it's dangerous. Can anyone help me with what this is?
Discomfort After Fecal Exam? (no replies)

Aloha!
My cat just got back from a vet visit about 8 hours ago, and he got his first rod fecal exam since he was a kitten, he is now 5 years old. (I used to live where the vet would come to me, so I always had fresh samples for my old vet.) He has been absolutely RESTLESS since we got home, and won't sit down for more than a few seconds at a time, and when he lies down he's now constantly repositioning like he is unable to get comfortable. I'm wondering if this is normal discomfort after a fecal exam with the rod (as this is very abnormal for him) or if I should be concerned.

Either way, in the future I think I'm going to insist on bringing samples for this new vet rather than put him through this again.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
-Rain

Cat rash (no replies)

My adult male cat has a rash on his chin. The area is red, inflamed, and swollen/bulbous, also the fur is thinning out around that area. He does not want anyone to touch the rash area and scratches it occasionally. He used to be an outdoor cat until two years ago, but he kept getting hurt so now he stays inside. Until about two months ago we had an old dog living with us who had become incontinent from old age and as an unfortunate result out carpets were really unhygienic, soaked in urine, for a few months. Finally my dad was able to put the dog down at his ripe old age and get the carpets cleaned and replaced. I'm worried that these conditions may have caused this skin leisure, even though it has appeared sometime after the carpets were cleaned. I'm sorry if I'm over sharing but I'm really worried about my cat and if anyone could give a few possible diagnosis and maybe some ideas to help alleviate any pain or discomfort for my cat until I can afford to take him to a vet at the end of the month, I'd really appreciate it.

Odd Cat behavior and concerns.... (no replies)

I have a cat who is 6-7 years old now. I got her as a kitten but exactly how old, one knows, estimate 12-16 weeks. She was a totally feral cat, born in an alley and unfortunately, she was one a few survivors after being poisoned with anti-freeze. After being released from vet care, I adopted her and it's taken me years, and mean years of diligent, gentle and very deliberate measure to gaining her trust. The past year has been a miracle, she comes when I call, I can actually pet her (carefully) while standing. When sitting, she will come to me and even sleeps in my lap and lately, sleeps in the bed with me at night. But, she has suffered from bladder problems and had a really rough spell of idiopathic vestibular disease. She's the most gentle animal I have ever owned. She never scratches or bites, even when cornered. She still runs away at the slightest sign of trouble. Sudden movements and poof, she's gone. I can't grab her at all. If she even thinks I am gonna grab her, she gone. Taking her to vet is almost impossible. The last time we tried, she broke through the locked cat door at mach one speed and disappeared for hours.

Lately though, she's started chasing her tail and trying to catch it and bite it. She will get in the kitchen do this for a long time. She goes in other rooms of the house and cries, and cries like she's lost and afraid. At night, stands on the floor at foot of bed and cries and cries till I call her up on the bed. She's started to have a really hefty appetite too. No matter how much I feed her, she's starving.

She's a odd cat so perhaps this is all just boredom/aging issues but I worry about her. She's been through so much and I'd hate to overlook something important.

(no replies)

Here in FL, I just had to bring an older dog with congestive heart failure to the vet for labored breathing. He was a sick relative's dog I was taking care of, and the relative's son (my cousin) decided to have him euthanized. It wasn't my call, and I had no way to pay for the alternative expensive treatment plan, though I would have gladly if I could have. When the time came, I asked if I could stay with the little guy while they put him to sleep, but the receptionist said it would cost an extra $30.00 because if I were to be present they would have to use a catheter. I wish I would have asked more questions. I ended up leaving them to it because she said she could not bill me, I had no cash on me, and she wanted to call my cheapo cousin to ask him. Also I first (extra stupid stupidly) thought they meant a urinary catheter, and didn't want the poor dog to suffer any more than necessary. I am having some heavy regrets now. Any help, please? I know now (with google's help) she meant an IV catheter, but why would their procedures change with me present? It seems to me like, if anything, having to use an optional catheter would only introduce more potential for undue stress for the animal, and consequently the owner/caregiver.

Our vet suggested trying another med, Tyrazol (carbimazol) 2 x 5 mg. Is it possible it will help? Surely these meds work - or do not work - the same way? I guess what I am asking is, is there hope?

Our cat is a happy cat, affectionate, even playful, and looks great except his weight loss. You would not believe he is over 5 yrs old! We hope for many happy years with him and his brother, who is the same age.

We would go the radioactive iodine route except the cat would have to stay with the vet´s, separated from us, and I do not think he could take that. He is a shy cat around strangers, and has never been away from home without us. Of course the iodine treatment is expensive (well over 1000 pounds where we live) and our cat is not insured. However, if we could just have the iodine treatment done and take him straight home we would not hesitate.

Dog is stuck in "air hump" position (no replies)

Hello there!

My one year old, fixed, male, German Shepherd is doing two strange things (noticed it start around 3/4 months ago):

1. At least 2-3 times a week, usually in the AM right when he wakes up, he will be rapidly air hump while hes laying on his side. He usually looks very confused as to what's happening. I'm not sure if anything comes out, but he typically licks the floor/his groin area right after. Then he gets up, and is fine all day! This usually happens in the morning, and if not it is right after he naps.

2. He will get "stuck" in the air hump position, his back is very arched-almost cat like- and he can't move. We try to get his attention/ throw toys/ give him treats and he just stares up at us helplessly until the moment passes and hes fine.

He has had basically no health problems since we adopted him (we got him at 3 months and he was already fixed, maybe this is the issued?)

Please help my puppy!!!

Thank you,
Kasia

Cat has a limp tail (no replies)

Hi, my cat recently had a fall, but seemed fine immediately afterwards. She is eating and drinking fine and is able to urinate by herself. However, yesterday we noticed that her tail was hanging straight down and wasn't moving much, but she was still able to feel it. Today she has been walking around with her tail still hanging straight down, but with an occassional curl at the tip. She is still running up the stairs normally and is acting normal, but I am not sure whether I should be concerned about the tail. It doesn't seem to be broken, but will it heal on it's own?

We have tried a variety of different brands and fresh foods, but at most he will try a bit and leave the rest. He seems to prefer biscuits but is not eating much of them. This has been going on for a few weeks now, but he does not seem to be losing weight and seems his usual self in all other respects. He does, however, seem constantly hungry. He has been sick, but only a couple of times.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Thanks, EC

Vestibular signs and facial nerve palsy in dog (no replies)

Please help - sorry about the essay but im in turmoil and all the vets don't seem to have a clue.

My 8 year old neutered female Jack Russell, is otherwise very well. Tendency to be a little overweight even though I don't feed her titbits. Incidentally moulting like never before this winter and drinking lots more but having just started on a dry food instead of wet.
She weighs 5.6kg at the mo.

She was itching her ears and shaking her head a little bit so when she went into the vets for a dental excision I asked if they could clean her ears. They reported nothing in her ears apart from wax.
Tooth was removed and all was ok..

A week or so later one eye started watering (same side as itchy ear), then I noticed it couldn't blink, when she flinched (quite a flinchy dog) her inner eyelid would come up over the eye instead. Blood vessels in her eye were noticeably more inflamed than in the other. Then I noticed her stumbling a bit when she shook her ears and her head was tilting to that same side. Took her to the vets who checked her ears and found nothing. Prescribed a short course of prednisone and gave me some eye drops because she couldn't blink. The wobbliness went away after about 3 days. Her eye now shuts and she has no problems at all but her muscles have obv contracted on that side in her lip because her nose has pulled over to the affected side. This was the first time I realised that her lip/ nose was involved because she had no problem eating or drinking and hadn't drooled.

A few weeks went by and the same eye started watering again and so this time I took her to the vet straight away.. Thinking that maybe it would progress again to "wobbly" stage and trying to intercept. A longer course of prednisone was prescribed as well as a course of antibiotics and an X-ray of the ear was performed which was clear. I don't exactly know the time frame now but that eye, apart from watering and a few more blood vessels, has been ok now for maybe a month, closes and the tilt seemed to have lessened.
In the mean time she had an increase of itching in one ear in particular.. The same ear which had itched more in the beginning and the same side as the tilt. It got quite bad so I took her to the vets again. The vet looked in her ear and said there was a plug of wax in front of her ear drum and so she couldn't see if the drum was damaged but gave me some cleaning solution (no meds) and told me to clean her ears every day for a week and to stop immediately at onset of any neurological signs. I asked at that point about doing blood tests as no one had mentioned bloods. They were taken and came back clear. I asked about hypothyroid and the vet said definitely not as facial paralysis is not seen in hypothyroid. I had read differently but she insisted no need for a thyroid panel. T3 (I think was taken.. Or is it T4) as part of the bloods and was in "normal" range. Amylase was slightly low but otherwise all normal.
Ear itching improved a lot after cleaning.

Fast forward to last week.
Exactly the same happened in the same order to the opposite eye and side of face.
Watering noticed first, then paralysis of eye. Lip slightly droopy but eating fine. Took her to the vet who put her straight on prednisone and antibiotic. This time though She has been given two weeks worth at 2.5mg twice daily as opposed to 1mg twice daily as before. Not sure why as same symptoms as before??
I was booked to have my dog undergo a neurological exam yesterday but I cancelled it for the moment. I'm sure it's a very good idea and wonder why we haven't my done it sooner but she gets extremely stressed going to the vets.. Has done since the day she had her teeth removed and ears cleaned and I couldn't bare to do it to her again just yet.
I have seen 7 vets at the same practice now (not intentionally) and we are starting to go round in circles (excuse the pun!)

My questions really are..
1. Could an inner ear infection possibly affect the nerves on the other side of the face if left long enough?
2. Do you think the eye that was affected first would have improved like it has if it was caused by a tumour (as one vet thinks it is)? She has also put on weight as I've not walked her as much so I thought cancer was unlikely?
3. I'm at the point where I hope this is just an episode of vestibular sorts and that it will pass like the last time with hopefully not many lasting nerve problems but surely an inner ear infection is most likely?
4. Why would she now be prescribed more than double the dose of steroids for more than double the length of time if she has exactly the same symptoms as before just on the opposite side?
5. Would any bacteria be present in the outer ear if the problem is behind the eardrum? Ie is there any point in doing cytology on the wax?
6. How best do I get that wax out? Are some cleaners better than others? Surely that could be the cause of all of this.
7. Would a long course of antibiotics harm her if im wrong about inner ear infection?

THANK YOU!!!!

He isnt in any pain and i checked him for ticks and he is eating like normal. Do you think it should take him to the vet because last time he was there he nearly got a heart attack and freaked out so bad we had to take him home.

She won't let me clip them, in fact she freaks out when anyone goes near her feet. She had a tooth removed 6 months ago and we asked our vet to cut her claws at the same time but when we got her back they were only marginally shorter (I'm assuming because the quick is also long). I think her claws are affecting her walk and she is in some pain with them sometimes because she catches them on things.

Is it possible to take her to my vet for sedation/GA where they can be cut right back and cauterised? Is this something my vet is likely to agree to? I can't think of another solution.

At the moment both parents and 2 babies are in the same combo of hutches connected with tubes... I gather from previous posts that the babies will become sexually mature soon and that the male doesn't pose a threat to his young??
Please confirm?? If the babies are female and I neuter the male, could they live together indefinitely as I know they like to live in groups... If we do rehome them, at what age do they leave their mum please?? Also, should I neuter the male ASAP to avoid the mum becoming pregnant on her next heat??
Many thanks
Elsa
