Becoming a vet after becoming a vet nurse (no replies)

Hi, I could really do with some advice.

I am currently sixteen years old and have been working part time in a vet for over a year, as well as having work experience placements in two vets, and so have lots of experience of surgical environments and know lots about vaccines, injections (etc)... even part time I get to do a lot, including having to use my own knowledge to help save animals on my own (eg- rabbits), preparing injections, assisting surgeries and consultations, making up surgical kits, etc.

I am currently looking at going to Nottingham Trent University to study veterinary nursing, which requires just 160 UCAS points (including one social science A Level). I didn't take Biology, Chemistry, Maths or Physics A Level, but I do take Psychology (which counts as a social science). I attended the open day and loved it!

One of the undergrad vet nurses told me that I can do a three or four year course in veterinary nursing and then have the option and right qualifications to do an additional two year course in veterinary science.

If this is true, do I need scientific A Levels? I am scientifically inclined and have a passion for microbiology in particular, but my GCSE exams went badly, meaning I was rejected from taking Biology and Chemistry A Level.

Please help me! I feel so strongly about this, but if I can only be a vet nurse I'd still see myself having a great future. Please be blunt with me, as I just need a clear answer

Thankyou so much,

Annie.

I'm 15. What can I do now to help become a veterinarian? (2 replies)

Hi,
I'm 15 and in Year 10 at Secondary School. I have always loved animals, especially my pets (guinea pigs and a cockatiel) and equines. I have also always been interested in Biology, and always wanted to become a small animal pet vet.
Being 15, I haven't started applying to colleges let alone Universities, but I was wondering what can I do now to give me the best possible chance of getting accepted into Vet school and becoming a veterinarian? I am hoping to try and get experience over my summer holidays, although most places don't allow under 16's. Should I perhaps see if I could go to a vets every evening of a weekday? Will experience now count, such as going to a vets in my summer holidays for as many weeks as possible? I was thinking of either a date log of what I did each day, or an overall review of what I saw, experienced and learned, or even a scrapbook? Or would it be best to do something like 2 weeks pet shop, 2 weeks vets? Or one week my local boarding kennels and cattery (all one place), one week pet shop, one week veterinary? Or 4 weeks veterinary! And has any vets found that carrying on to the Silver Duke of Edinburgh will help a lot to get you into vet school? (P.s. I don't mind animal experience at all- it's just finding the time and getting the perfect place and the proportions right)!

Here's what I currently do:

Grades:
I haven't sat any GCSE's yet (besides IT coursework), but I am in the top set for all of my subjects and roughly predicted A's. I'm working hard in revision and in class and think I could pull of some A*s. My most strongest subject is English, and I'm also quite strong at Biology too! I have done a exam (not a mock though) in Physics and I got an A*, and in my English controlled assessments I am reaching the top band and got full marks in one! In my mock RE GCSE I got an A, and I got a Merit in IT which I've been told is equivalent to an A apparently.

Subjects:
I'm in the top set for all of my subjects. I do Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English, Maths, PSE, RE, and my options that I picked are Spanish, Business Studies and History.

Volunteering/ work experience:
-Year 10 Work experience: Booked in at a small animal veterinary practise for 5 week days.
-Every Saturday I spend all day at a local stable, mucking out sometimes but particularly working with horses in brushing, tacking up and leading in lessons. I also have my own riding lesson at the end. I have been doing this for about a year, and continue to do this.(I do love horses)!

Extra:
I am just finishing my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. (Physical= improving my horse riding, Volunteering= Helping out at the stables- though I have been doing this long before DofE, Skills= Learning 2 new languages). I'm also volunteering as a peer reader for year 6's after school each week, and applying to be a prefect and possibly a head girl.

Other places i.e animal rescue centres I have spent hours researching and looking into, but all either have special requirements e.g.have to be over 16, or are hours away!

Where can I take my degree? (3 replies)

So I'm a couple of months away from finishing my degree in Animal Management (dissertation hand in on Monday) and it dawns on me that come June/July time I'm going to be wading into the world of job hunting.

But then I realise.... I have no idea where I can actually go with my degree. I'm beginning to worry that AM has been so broad spectrum a curriculum that I don't have enough 'specialist' knowledge/expertise to actually be employable in many fields. I know where my interests lie (veterinary science/canine behaviour/reptile husbandry) but how do you take those to the bank?

I would be interested to hear the thoughts of people (particularly those who hire and fire) as to what their 'reaction' (so to speak) would be when presented with a candidate who has a qualification such as my own OR to hear the thoughts of people who perhaps have similar qualifications and the direction they have been able to take their studies.

modular resits (1 reply)

So I just got my January A2 results back today and worked out that im most likely set for 3 As and a B. However, the B is in biology, so I wanted to up that grade. And I was really hoping for an A* in one of my maths but my latest exam went really badly.

So 2 questions :
1. Which vet schools accept resits?
2. With those that dont (or those that offer places to non resitters over resitters), will they just ignore my resits and look at my original grades, or just completely ignore my application because I have resat.

Thanks.

Year 12 Looking for Work Experience (West Midlands) (no replies)

I'm a Year 12 student currently, and I am trying to collect enough work experience for a convincing application into a Vererinary Surgeonry course for 2013.

After visiting one university, I've been told I need at least three weeks more experience in a vet's practice, at least a week handling small animals (not veterinary experience, like kennels) and at least a week around horses.

If you are in the West Midlands, England, specifically around or in Birmingham, Wolverhapton, or Walsall, and could offer me any time during school holidays, I would be very grateful. I'd also be able to do a Saturday or Sunday shift. I would not require payment.

Thank you.

3 or 4 A levels? (2 replies)

My daughter Rosie is totally confused having just returned from her open evening in preparation for 6th form. It clearly states on Edinburgh's literature that 3 A levels at grade A are required. We are fully aware of the 3 subjects needed. Rosie's head of 6th form is adamant that she will need to take a 4th , they even want to put her in for a 5th A level (additional maths). We are aware of the importance of the practical experience needed. She has a full portfolio. Can anyone advise please?

Getting to do more as a vet student? (1 reply)

Hello,

I am a final year veterinary student in the UK. I would really like to develop my skills as best as possible and be ready for real-word veterinary practice. Unfortunately I am finding that at many of my placements I am not being given the opportunity to further my practical and surgical skills. I do not believe that this is due to my incompetence as I'm often told that I do a good job when I do get this opportunity.

I am happy to ask the supervising vet to practice more surgery however I am afraid of appearing too pushy - has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on how to go about asking?

Unfortunately, I have not managed to secure any placements at the RSPCA and I know that they are often more willing to let students develop their skills.

Rachel
